Autumn Day 2004
|
More than 7,000 individuals, including residents and their friends and family, attended Autumn Day at the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown on September 11. The annual open house featured its traditional fare, and guests consumed a whopping 15,756 sandwiches (hot dog and sausage), 225 gallons of bean soup, 940 vegetable plates, 18,076 drinks and 11,952 ice cream novelties! It just goes to show that fun, fellowship and food go hand-in-hand!
The featured entertainment included the Greater Kensington String Band; children's games provided by Elizabethtown Job's Daughters; roaming jugglers; clowns; tours of the 1,400-acre campus; and farm market, woodworking, crafts, food and Masonic information stands.
This year's highlight was the first-ever Wachovia Masonic Village Charity Mini Grand Prix, featuring 15 racing teams. Through sponsorships for the event, more than $50,000 was raised to benefit the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown and the Arthritis Foundation, Central Pennsylvania Chapter.
William Slater II, R.W.G.M., commended the participants on their efforts. "Before and since that dreaded day (9-11), Americans have come together to help others, contribute to relief efforts and volunteer their time to aid those in need," he said. "This spirit of service is exemplified in today's mini grand prix race, which we are proud to host here at the Masonic Village to benefit both this caring community and the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation."
He honored the veterans in the stands and families with loved ones in the military, and asked the crowd to observe a moment of silence in memory of those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. The Rev. A. Preston Van Deursen led attendees in prayer.
