Residents and community volunteers were honored in Elizabethtown, Lafayette Hill and Sewickley during National Volunteer Week, April 19-25. A volunteer recognition event is planned in the fall for resident and community volunteers in Warminster.
Volunteers are thanked each year for their kindness and generosity, which greatly benefits our residents. We thank them for furthering our Mission of Love.

Elizabethtown by Cynthia B. Hollinger, Director, Volunteer Services
The Masonic Village at Elizabethtown celebrated 440 resident and community volunteers with the theme "Volunteers plant the seeds of kindness" on April 21. The Brossman Ballroom was transformed by our creative greenhouse staff into a beautiful garden blooming with fragrant tulips, daffodils, delphiniums and forsythia. A trellis with ivy and morning glories, handcreated sun dials, homegrown grass, flower seed packets and watering cans spilling over with flowers all created our garden party. Dinner was expertly prepared by our own Food Services Department and served by 43 administrators, supervisors and staff who enthusiastically had volunteered to serve those who serve them every week in many areas on our campus. Dinner music with a flower and garden theme was provided by our music therapist, Ann Dinsmore, who also personalized words to the song "Country Gardens" and taught it to the audience at the end of the evening. Master gardener Diane Tannehill, Lititz, created a floral arrangement after dinner and inspired the volunteers by correlating the meaning of the chosen flowers in her arrangement with the value and importance of our volunteers' services. The following day, 48 volunteers who reside in the Masonic Health Care Center and Freemasons Building were celebrated at dinner with the same garden theme, beautiful flowers and menu. Musical entertainment was provided by Robin and Eric Shafer.
Joseph E. Murphy, CEO, will tell you that "just as it takes a careful arrangement of annuals and perennials in a variety of colors, planted strategically in the sun or shade, to create just the right landscape, it takes volunteers with varied talents, personalities and qualities to care for the unique needs of our residents."
We thank our volunteers for helping our garden grow so bountifully with their seeds of kindness!
Lafayette Hill by Josh Barol, Director of Recreation
On April 20, the Masonic Village at Lafayette Hill hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Social in the Kenneth Mills Auditorium for our 90 resident and community volunteers.
"Volunteers are very important to Masonic Village at Lafayette Hill because they make our residents feel loved and wanted by the attention they receive from them," said Josh Barol, director of Recreation Services. "Volunteers add a special spice to our community through the loving and caring way they spend their time with us."
With the theme "Volunteers Take Time to Care," the event also featured door prizes and refreshments, as well as the presentation of certificates and "thank you" lapel pins to each volunteer.
Sewickley by the Activities Staff
The Masonic Village at Sewickley honored its "Super Stars" - its volunteers - with a delicious luncheon in the Clubhouse Dining Room on April 22. More than 100 resident and community volunteers attended, along with six staff members.
Each volunteer received a silver photo, inscribed with the words "Super Star."
Our volunteers are so important. In retirement living, they operate the general store to quench your thirst for milk and soda. They are a smiling face when you walk in the Clubhouse front door. They stock and organize the library for everyone in our community to enjoy. They help new residents learn their way around the Masonic Village at Sewickley. They support our Marketing Department by being key ambassadors to potential residents and support the Child Care Center by feeding babies and playing with toddlers. Volunteers are truly "super stars" to both residents and staff.
