Masonic Village Awards Scholarships to Quaker Valley High School Seniors

For the second consecutive year, Masonic Village awarded $2,500 volunteer scholarships to two Quaker Valley High School seniors at the school's Senior Class Night on May 23.

The scholarship recipients were:

  • Cassandra Morgan, who will attend American University in Washington, D.C., to prepare for a career in international relations, and
  • Lauren Selleck, who will attend Elizabethtown College in Elizabethtown, Pa., to prepare for a career in business administration.
The scholarship recipients were selected by the Masonic Village Scholarship Committee, made up of residents and staff, with consideration of the applicants' scholarship; extracurricular activities and interests; awards, honors or recognitions received for achievements; counselor evaluations; leadership contributions; an original 250-word essay describing the benefits of their volunteer efforts at the Masonic Village; and a written reference from a Masonic Village's staff person with whom they interacted during their volunteer experience.

According to Robert Kocent, executive director of the Masonic Village at Sewickley, the youth volunteers contribute their time and energy, and in return, feel the personal satisfaction that comes with community service. Some even discover a future career path in health care.

"We can't thank our youth volunteers enough for all their contributions," Kocent said. "Our residents look forward to their spirit and willingness to help. The youth gain a sense of responsibility and build special relationships with our residents. All parties involved are enriched through the experience."

Masonic Village volunteers must be 13 years of age or older and schedule a personal interview with the volunteer coordinator. Volunteers are asked to commit to a regularly-scheduled weekly assignment and provide their own transportation. Volunteer opportunities include escorting residents to activities and community outings, assisting with various types of activity programming, pet therapy and visiting with residents. Youth volunteers may qualify to receive one of five scholarships available each year.

Those interested in volunteering at the Masonic Village are encouraged to call the volunteer coordinator at (412) 741-1400, extension 3200, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
