For the tenth consecutive year, Masonic Village awarded $2,500 volunteer scholarships to five Elizabethtown Area High School seniors at the school's Senior Awards Program on May 15.
The scholarship recipients were:
Emily Fritchman, who will attend Elizabethtown College to prepare for a career in either occupational therapy or special education;
Katie Gilbreath, who will attend York College to prepare for a career in accounting;
Daniel Heath, who will attend Pennsylvania State University to study pre-medicine;
Jessica Hickernell, who will attend Quinnipiac University to study public relations; and
Cody Nickel, who will attend Elizabethtown College to prepare for a career in business administration.
Candidates for the Masonic Village scholarships must be members of the current graduating class of Elizabethtown Area High School and have a minimum of 100 hours of volunteer service at the Masonic Village during their high school years.
The scholarship recipients were selected by a Elizabethtown Area High School committee of guidance counselors and Cynthia B. Hollinger, director, volunteer services, at the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown, with consideration of the applicants' scholarship; extracurricular activities and interests; awards, honors or recognitions received for achievements; counselor evaluations; leadership contributions; an original 250-word essay describing the benefits of their volunteer efforts at the Masonic Village; and a written reference from a Masonic Village's staff person with whom they interacted during their volunteer experience.
According to Joseph E. Murphy, chief executive officer for the Masonic Village, the facility's Youth Volunteer Program was established to provide teenagers with an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the residents, while simultaneously benefiting from valuable life experience and personal satisfaction.
"Our volunteers add to the quality of life our residents enjoy. Our youth volunteers, especially, bring an element of spontaneity and vivaciousness to our programs. We are proud of the accomplishments of our volunteers and are honored to be able to recognize and reward these individuals who have supported, through their service, the Masonic Village's Mission of Love," Murphy said.
Hollinger said, "Through their selfless service, our teen volunteers enjoy new friendships and have the opportunity to interact with a diverse population in a variety of settings, allowing them to broaden their interpersonal skills and continue to develop their outlook and sense of responsibility, all while learning about the many career opportunities available in a modern health care facility. But, most of all they have fun!"
Masonic Village volunteers must be 13 years of age or older and have passing
grades in all major subjects. Applicants must provide one written reference and schedule a
personal interview with Hollinger. Volunteers are asked to commit to a regularly scheduled weekly assignment and provide their own transportation. Additional volunteer benefits include a complimentary meal on the day of the service, a golf-type logo shirt and a complimentary pass for the outdoor pool for the entire summer. New volunteers are required to attend an all-day orientation on June 20.
Those interested in volunteering at the Masonic Village are encouraged to call (717) 367-1121, extension 33175, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
