Happy 103rd Birthday
Mrs. Jean G. Gelder, a resident of the Masonic Village in Elizabethtown, Pa., will celebrate her 103rd birthday on April 2, 2005.

A native of Brownsville, Pa., she lived on a 65-acre farm with her family. The youngest of eight children, she enjoyed roller-skating and playing with her family's cats and dogs. As a teenager, she was given the task of milking cows-- not a favorite chore, according to Mrs. Gelder. She remembers wishing she were never taught how to milk a cow!

After two years of business school, she worked six years as a stenographer for the Monongahela Railroad. After retiring as a bank teller from the First National Bank of Brownsville, Mrs. Gelder lived in Baltimore and then Treasure Island, Florida for 20 years.

She and her late husband, Lawrence "Butch" Gelder were married on October 11, 1924, and raised two sons, Charles and James, and one daughter, Anne Powers, who is also a resident at Masonic Village. She has seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren. and one great-great-grandchild.

Knowing about Masonic Village since she was a little girl, she was happy to become a resident in August 2000.

Her daily walks and watching TV favorites "Murder She Wrote" and "Perry Mason" help her stay in shape and keep her mind sharp. Her advice for a long, happy life is to "live right."
