Take Time to Plan Your Retirement
Masonic Homes Has Master Plan to Serve

With each passing year, we find it is all too true: Time waits for no one.

This Fall marks the 13th year since the doors opened to retirement living at the Masonic Homes at Elizabethtown. Initially comprised of 220 apartments and 16 cottages, retirement living at the Masonic Homes at Elizabethtown today consists of 450 varying types of apartments and cottages.

The popular concept of retirement living that was adopted in 1990 at the Masonic Homes continues to generate increasing interest around the country. According to a recent profile of senior citizens published by the Administration on Aging, one out of every eight Americans is now 65 years of age or older and by 2030 one out of every five Americans will reach that age. Because of that, the Committee on Masonic Homes has authorized the development of a master plan for the Elizabethtown campus to include additional services that individuals are requesting.

For those folks "not quite ready yet," it will be of interest to gain "good life" perspective of residents who have resided in retirement living for a few years. A conversation with Gene Light, P.M., Brownstone Lodge No. 666, Hershey, and his wife, Frances, revealed that they believed their move to retirement living in 1994 was a good decision. Now, eight years later, Bro. and Mrs. Light know they made the right decision in their retirement planning!

In August 1993, Mrs. Light had just retired, and Bro. Light was anticipating retirement in six months. They had just completed the finishing touches on their home...everything was in order. Then, on Autumn Day of 1993, Bro. and Mrs. Light visited the Elizabethtown campus and toured retirement living. Their idea of what retirement was going to be, and what it could be, changed that day!

Light would have no home maintenance or repair concerns; and if they chose to travel, they would not have to worry about anything except locking the door behind them. Since Bro. Light's mother had resided at the Masonic Health Care Center, they were well acquainted with the quality health care and services available to Masonic Homes' residents and afforded the desired security for their health needs, not only for the present but also for the future.

"Truly, this is retirement," they thought.

In April 1994, after a waiting period, Bro. and Mrs. Light moved into retirement living in a two-bedroom apartment with a balcony. Eight years have passed all too quickly, and today their feelings are "stronger than ever." To move to retirement living was their best decision. They continue to have the time and energy to be involved in activities they choose, freedom to travel, and peace of mind for today as well as the future.
