Four lodges of the 50th Masonic District responded to a call to help brother Jay A. Benfield, P.M., Whitfield Lodge No. 622, Tatamy, who lost one leg and suffered a weakened knee in the other when a wall collapsed on him and he was trapped overnight. The lodges Whitfield Lodge and Portland Lodge No. 311; Manoquesy Lodge No. 413, Bath; and Pocono Lodge No. 780, Cresco raised a combined total of more than $22,000 in contributions from their members. On behalf of the four participating lodges, Dennis B. Schall, Sr.,W.M., Manoquesy Lodge, presented a check to Bro. Benfield.

The wall fell on Bro. Benfield while he was alone in his church the day after Christmas doing volunteer work installing computer and telecommunications wiring. Trapped under construction materials which had become dislodged, he was unable to free himself or to communicate with anyone. He spent the night trapped until workmen arrived the next morning to free him and have him rushed to the hospital. The trauma necessitated amputation of the left leg above the knee and the right knee will require surgical attention once he becomes more mobile with his prosthesis.
