JOHN R. MILLER, D.D.G.M., AGE 59 John R. Miller, age 59, D.D.G.M., Masonic District B, died suddenly July 22 while on vacation in Virginia. He was a Past Master of University Lodge No.51, Philadelphia, and served as a D.D.G.M. since 1998. He was a member of Abington Holy Royal Arch Chapter of York Rite. A U.S. Army infantryman from 1961-1965 of the Vietnam War, Bro. Miller also was a member of the Honor Guard for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Caisson Platoon, the Fife and Drum Corps, and member of the Old Guard. He was an Eagle Scout and member of the Order of the Arrow and had been very active in Scouting for more than 30 years before and after his military service.
LAURENCE G. HETTICH, 50, D.D.G.M. Laurence G. Hettich, 50, D.D.G.M., 21st Masonic District, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge, MA. Bro. Hettich, who had been serving as a D.D.G.M. since 1998, was W.M. of State College Lodge No. 700 in 1992 and 1993, and was a Senior Instructor in both Bellefonte and Clearfield Schools of Instruction. He was serving as 1st Lt. Commander of Williamsport Consistory, A.A.S.R. He was active in the York Rite bodies and had served as the presiding officer of Nittany Council, Royal and Select Master Masons, and successively as Recorder, Commander, and Treasurer of Constans Commandery No. 33, Knights Templar. He was a member of Williamsport Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine. He was a member of the degree team of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Centre Forest No. 129. Bro. Hettich is survived by his wife, Nancy M. (Cline); a daughter, Jennifer Schutt; a sister, Carolyn Hettich; and a granddaughter. He was a self-employed cabinet maker.
ARTHUR THOMAS MOORE, 88, FORMER ASSISTANT TO THE GRAND MASTER Bro. Arthur Thomas Moore, 88, for many years the Assistant to the Grand Master and recipient of the Pennsylvania Franklin Medal, died Aug. 28 in St. Petersburg, FL. A native of McKeesport, Bro. Moore was educated there and at Wabash College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. During World War II, he was an officer in the Sea Coast Artillery and Military Government. In civilian life, he was a reporter-editor for The Pittsburgh Sun-Telegraph. He served as the publicity chairman for Syria Temple and was the first editor of The Voice of Syria which he forged into a top Shrine newspaper and was largely responsible for the success of the circus and football game. Bro. Moore was married to Marguerite (Peggy) M. Moore, a past grand officer of the Order of The Eastern Star and former Mother Advisor of the Rainbow for Girls in the Murrysville-Export area. She died April 29, 1990. He was made a Mason in the former Tyrian Lodge No. 612, Wilmerding. He became a member of Forbes Trail Lodge No. 783, where he served on the building committee for a new lodge hall for Export. Bro. Moore was a member of the Scottish Rite in Pittsburgh of Gourgas Lodge of Perfection; Pennsylvania Council, Princes of Jerusalem; Pittsburgh Chapter of Rose Croix; and Pennsylvania Consistory. He was coroneted a 33º Mason in Pittsburgh in 1977. In York Rite, he was a member of Excelsior Mark Lodge No. 216, Philadelphia; Media Chapter; and Philadelphia St. John's Commandery No. 4. He was a Shriner in Syria Temple, Pittsburgh, and a member of Philadelphia High Twelve Club. |
