Fifty years ago, William Henry Cook (center) served as Worshipful Master of Salem Lodge No. 330, Hamlin. This year, D. Carl Peet (left), D.D.G.M., 14th Masonic District, and Charles C. Dodt (right), Worshipful Master of Salem Lodge, honored him and presented him with a plaque of recognition. Interestingly, when this Past Master was initiated, he was one of four Cooks receiving the E.A. Degree. The brothers, William, Ernest, Harold, and James Cook, all were initiated on Nov. 3, 1947. |

When The Square, an independent quarterly magazine for Masons in England, conducted a competition of interesting lodge histories, Robert L. Engel, P.M., submitted the book he had produced on the history of Armstrong Lodge No. 239, Freeport, PA, constituted in 1849. He captured the runner-up award. In addition to the usual historical notes, such as the lodge having "paid $15 rent to the Odd Fellows for the use of the building," there were numerous anecdotes detailing the operations of the lodge, such as one the publication chose to recount: "a bill for $4.50...for the supply of spittoons ..." to which the The Square interjected, "Now there's a lodge tradition we had not come across!" |
