Extending Family Traditions

More and more fathers and grandfathers (sometimes even great-grandfathers) are greeting their sons and grandsons as "Brothers" since R.W. Grand Master Marvin A. Cunningham, Sr., announced the decision last year to permit the men 18 years or older to petition Freemasonry in Pennsylvania.

William E. "Wes" Scarlett (center), the first 18-year-old raised in Fayette Lodge No. 228, Uniontown, is the fourth generation of Masons in his family. Thomas Jefferson Limber III, 20, (second from right), not only became the first Mason under age 21 in Eureka Lodge No. 290, Greenville, but also he is the third generation of the family to be a Master Mason. His father, Thomas J. Limber, Jr. (right), is a member of the same Lodge and his grandfather, Thomas J. Limber, Sr. (second from left), is a member of Lake Lodge No. 434, Sandy Lake. At left is Charles J. Heck, W.M., Eureka Lodge. After he was raised, his cousin, Timothy P. Templeton, D.D.G.M., 53rd Masonic District, presented the new Master Mason with his Masonic Bible.

The first two 18 year-old Petitioners to Valley Lodge No. 459, Masontown, were raised on Jan. 15. Thomas H. Horner III, pictured (left front) with his father, Thomas H. Horner, Jr. (left rear) and Justin M. Craig (center), with his brother, Jason F. Craig, and father, W. Frank Craig, Jr., P.M. In the rear is J. Craig Bailey, W.M. Bro. Craig's brother conferred the Entered Apprentice Mason's Degree and his father conferred the Master Mason's Degree.
