The Masonic Children's Home has many exciting and positive collaborations with Elizabethtown College students who volunteer, fulfill course requirements, complete internships, or receive work-study hours for their efforts with the children. There are eight students who volunteer as tutor aides to work with elementary, middle, and high school-age students. Through associations with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Lancaster and the Communities That Care, 13 children have been matched with the college students. Through the Student Directed Learning Community (SDLC) at Elizabethtown College, several service learning groups have completed projects such as "Into the Streets." The "Lighthouse" group hosted a recreational activity for the children at the college in February. The "FIG" group organized an ongoing mentor program with the middle school girls. The "SMILE" group planned for an intergenerational program at the Masonic Health Care Center with the residents and the children in March and April. Three senior psychology majors are interns at the Children's Home. Two staff members at the Children's Home are Elizabethtown College alumni. The Children's Home is indeed fortunate and appreciative of the partnerships with the college and looks forward to many more in the future. |
