Over the past few years, residents at the Masonic Homes have shared an increasing interest in the use of computers. In response to this enthusiasm, a Computer Club was formed in 1997 which allows computer enthusiasts to get together and share knowledge and ideas. However, the computer frenzy did not truly take off until one of our residents, Mrs. Margaret Coates, a retired business teacher, offered to teach computer classes.

Throughout 1999, Mrs. Coates taught residents' computer classes, free of charge, at the computer labs at Elizabethtown College. The challenge for Mrs. Coates and the residents taking the courses was the lack of one-on-one instruction, with each class averaging more than 20 participants. According to Mrs. Coates, individual instruction is most beneficial during the initial stages of computer learning.

In an effort to provide the optimal learning environment, the Masonic Homes' Resource and Computer Center in the Smith North Building opened on Jan. 3. This center is equipped with six personal computers, each with large 19-inch monitors and printers, and all computers are linked for access to the Internet.

The response to date has been tremendous, with more than 100 residents enrolled for classes! Mrs. Coates has gone to great efforts to develop the first set of classes so that residents who are unfamiliar with computers feel comfortable registering to participate in the classes.

In the future, the center also will offer Internet classes for residents instructed by Bro. Henry and Mrs. Chris Clay, Donora Lodge No. 626. The Clays have offered to share their knowledge of computers and use of the Internet which they gained through their professional and personal experiences. With the help of knowledgeable resident volunteers, the Resource and Computer Center will provide residents with the opportunity to learn basic computer skills and the ability to access information and knowledge available through the Internet.
