Brethren,
I
am honored and humbled to serve our Lodge as Worshipful Master.
This year promises to be filled with interesting programs and lots
of fun. The highlight of the year will be a tour of Washington D.C.’s
Masonic history and a Phillies vs. Nationals ballgame in D.C. More
details will follow once the 2012 Phillies schedule is published.
We’ll be kicking off the year with a full agenda for January’s
stated meeting and a visit by the D.D.G.M. We’ll be honoring
two members and also presenting Bibles to our three newly raised
Master Masons.
What
I hope to accomplish most this year is a renewed interest by idle
members and to strengthen the line of Officers for the coming years.
The Officers I’ve appointed are young, energetic and are the
future of the Lodge. Please come out and support them. It’s
up to all of us to help keep their interest in our Lodge alive and
grow their desire to lead.
My
promise to all of you is to lead the Lodge as best I can. All I
ask in return is that you come out and cheer me on. On behalf of
my wife, Lynn and children, Devin and Hannah, I wish you all the
blessings of the holiday season and a happy, prosperous new year.
Fraternally,
David

Brethren,
You
don't want to miss the National Sojourners flag presentation at
the February Stated....it's quite a show. We'll also be serving
Chicken Marsala for dinner. So, if the Sojourners don't motivate
you to come out, maybe the menu will! Both of them will be fantastic.
Congratulations
once again to Bro. Mel Stevens, P.M. on earning his 50 Year Service
Award. I intend to recognize our 12 brethren who earned their
25 year award at our Anniversary Banquet this April, so please
plan to attend and celebrate their big night with them.
To
those members who have not paid their 2012 dues, PLEASE contact
me if you need assistance at 267-280-6762. This April, unpaid
members will be suspended. The Grand Master has continued the
Amnesty Program so if you owe more than one year's dues, only
the current year is required to bring you to current standing!
I realize times are tough. Please speak to me to avoid suspension
which will negatively affect all Masonic bodies as well.
Pencil
in Saturday, June 9th for our DC Masonic history tour and ball
game. The Nationals schedule didn't jive so we'll be attending
the Orioles game at Camden Yards against the Phillies on our way
back home. The game is 7:05pm so we will be departing the Temple
around 11:00 am. We have 40 seats and members are encouraged to
bring a potential candidate or other guest if they wish. More
details will follow as they become available.
Most Sincerely and Fraternally,
Dave

Brethren,
We take this opportunity to acknowledge, congratulate, and sincerely
thank Bro. Richard (Rick) H. Hughes, P.M., for his hard work,
dedication, and most sucessful year while serving this Lodge as
Worshipful Master in 2010.
Bro. Rick was thrust into the position of Worshipful Master a
little sooner than he expected but graciously assumed the duties
and tackeled the job in a most professional and cordial manner.
We now wish our "Baby Past Master" the best of luck
and continued sucess in his new endeavor as Lodge Treasurer. I
am sure he will continue to ably serve this Lodge in the same
manner we have become accostomed to this past year.

Brethren
Welcome
to a New Year, a New Master, and a New Pennsylvania Freemasonry.
I have been elected to the East at a very controversial time in
our Fraternity. I hope the changes to our great Fraternity will
not deter any of our members from attending meetings or any other
Lodge functions. I feel that I am a traditionalist and plan on keeping
the ritual alive in our Lodge, while implementing Grand Master Sturgeon's
changes. I am available to talk, if you have any questions or concerns
about any of the changes.
I have a fun and informative year planned for our Lodge. My goal
this year is to have fun while continuing to grow our Masonic ideals.
I have scheduled programs that teach us about the ritual as well
as how Masonry has been effected by those who have fought for our
freedom. We will also have Friend to Friend night in March, it was
a huge success last year and I hope that it will be again this year.
So bring your friends, I guarantee they will be entertained.
I joined Freemasonry for reasons that I thought were important to
me at that time. However, as I take my Masonic journey the reasons
are becoming clearer, "do good unto all". So I am looking
to the end of the year to have a charity fund raiser. I am still
undecided on the event but I am looking towards a dinner and a silent
auction. This is something I have been brainstorming about for a
year or so and have changed my mind several time. The time for the
decision is near so your input would be greatly appreciated.
This is only my first of many installations of the "Masters
Corner". I hope you will check back often to see what's new
and exciting. If you have anything you would like to discuss please
feel free to call on me.
Sincerely
and Fraternally,
Rick

| Time
Flies |
Brethren,
My how the time flies, I cannot believe that I am into my third
month as Master. The year has been an exciting one thus far; I
never know what to expect next. We are currently working on the
Lodge Audit as well as the General Return. The parties involved
are working diligently to prepare these items and have them ready
for Grand Lodge.
As
I move through the first half of the year I am focusing on raising
money for the Lodge as well as our favorite Masonic organizations.
I will be focusing on our Spaghetti Dinner and Silent Auction
which is scheduled for Saturday October 23, 2010. We are looking
to sell 200 tickets. The cost for this event is $10 a ticket with
children six and under free. This is an open event for Masons
and Non-Masons alike. The Lodge will also be selling “Pennsylvania
Freemason” T-shirts. Order forms will be available at our
Meetings and I will also be emailing out an order form. All orders
must be received by our May Stated Meeting in order to have the
shirts available by our June Stated Meeting.
We still have several Candidates receiving Degree’s over
the next few months. I hope to see many of you there to greet
our new Brethren. I feel we are losing the interest of many new
members because they do not see many Brethren on the sidelines
during Degrees. I hope this will change over the year as this
Lodge needs its new members to be active. The only way to get
them involved is to lead by example. So let's come out and support
our Lodge as well as our new Brethren.
Together we can do great things and truly make this a year to
remember.
Fraternally,
Rick
Hughes, W.M.

Without his unending commitment, and the other Officers and Members,

Brethren
Greetings
from the East, and Welcome, to "The Master's Corner".
The Idea of writing a Master’s
Message, and having it attached to our web site, has been suggested
to me by our Webmaster, Bro. Frederick J. Fedak, P.M. I have for
some time considered another form of communication with you, other
than our Lodge Notice. Bro. Fred’s suggestion rekindled this
idea in a way that I think is doable, and I thank you “O Tall
One”.
Within
this page, I hope to keep you abreast of things
that are happening in the Lodge, what we are trying to accomplish
and improve on, various issues that confront us, and to talk of
events or other special matters of interest, as well as lighthearted
things: quotes or sayings that I come across, euphemisms, trivia,
funny stories with a moral, or maybe just a good natured joke. I
have a good amount of material, and I get more, everyday, on this
newfangled contraption I am typing into at the moment.

| That's
a Wrap |
Brethren,
As this will probably be my last “Master’s Corner”,
I want to thank all of you for allowing me the privilege and honor
of serving you, for these past 3 years as Worshipful Master. Although
some of the circumstances that brought about the need for me to
serve 3 years were not in keeping with the peace and harmony of
our great Fraternity, the end result, I feel has been a more enjoyable
and stronger Lodge. I hope that the majority of you feel the same.
As with all things in this world, there are positives and negatives.
On the positive side we cut our expenses by almost $10,000. We
have streamlined our roster and eliminated almost 100 people who
had not paid their dues in years. We are now able to use the roster
in a more efficient way to keep track of income. This also helps
provide us a system by which we can contact those that become
delinquent, so as to remind them that their dues are past due.
We have improved on our annual Audit and General Return. We have
an E-mail list of over a hundred names, who receive their Lodge
Notice that way, saving the Lodge much. Our bulletin boards in
the lobby now have the names of all the Past Masters of all 3
Lodges, that’s a combined 421 years. I have come up with
a Trestle Board for degree work, something that all other lodges
do. I have a list of our widows and send them a card for Mother’s
Day and Christmas. I would hope that this will be continued, and
possibly have added to it a birthday card. There are probably
a few other things that have been accomplished, but my point here
is that I hope you have all gained a renewed sense of pride in
your Lodge.
I should probably stop here, but there are a couple of failures
that I have had, that just cry out to me to be mentioned. One
is the fact that we do not have any family oriented social event.
Whether it be a “Family Night” at the Lodge, a Ladies
Night Banquet, or a Christmas Party. We had a Christmas Party
up until 2 years ago, when there were not enough advanced tickets
sold ahead of time, and it had to be cancelled. This was a wonderful
event for both adults and children, with Santa coming and giving
each kid a gift, and having their picture taken with Santa. It
is my prayer that, in the future, we find a way to bring it back.
The
other matter that is of great concern to me is our investments.
I have failed to convince those handling our funds that they need
to find a way to get an even greater return on our money. I have
sent them someone with a proven track record to help accomplish
this. That has not worked. One of the figures thrown out there
was 14% return on their money that another Masonic body gets.
Yesterday, I spoke with a Master of one of the other Lodges in
our district, who told me that his Lodge, at its best year, got
15%. We get 7%. My Brothers, you need to shake the cobwebs out
and get cracking. I informed you, the other night how much more
we need to run the Lodge next year. You said you couldn't’t
possibly give us that much. That’s the immediate problem,
what’s it going to be like 10 years from now. You need to
get started, “yesterday”. I was told when I became
Master, never to use the word “please”, but I implore
you, please, think about the future, try to see the “big
picture”. You are intelligent, gifted men, much smarted
than I. For the sake of the Lodge, for its future existence, will
you consider what I have presented ?
As Always, Your Fraternal Servant,
Paul R. Knapp, Thrice Worshipful Master

Brethren,
Summer break has come, and I wish you all a safe and enjoyable
summer. Over the summer, I plan on working on our Lodge’s
Bylaws. Contrary to regulations, we don’t have a current
set of bylaws. We have bylaws from each of the 3 individual Lodges,
going back 10, 20, and 30 years, or more, but not a current set
since the 2000 merger. If anyone has any info, or copies of something
that remotely resembles bylaws from around that time, would you
contact me, asap, so I might acquire a copy.
I have finished the work on the membership roster for this year.
We currently have a total membership of 395. There are still 58
delinquents who owe 1 and/or 2 years dues. Brethren, the smooth
running of the Lodge depends on everyone paying their dues, YEARLY.
We need to be able to know what the Lodge’s income is, in
order to plan programs and activities, as well as to cover all
our expenses for the year. Not receiving dues from 58 men represents
more than $4000 that the Lodge did not get this year. If you are
one of them, won’t you send us a pleasant surprise?
Tonight, we had our midyear Past Master's Meeting. It was quite
a productive meeting. We discussed and decided on our Officers
for next year. It was a unanimous vote on Rick to move to the
Master’s chair. Congratulations! We also talked about ritual
and balloting and elections. We spoke of upcoming events and possible
fundraising ideas for next year. We also had a long discussion
on the finances of the Lodge. Although this was limited by having
only one of the trustees from each of the committees present,
we did come to the conclusion that a more in-depth Past Master's
Meeting will be held in October, strictly for the discussion of
finances, and to explore the possibilities of switching a number
of our accounts from equity producing to more income producing.
The Lu Lu Shrine Family Picnic is Saturday, July 18th, our Lodge
has purchased 20 tickets, I still have 5 or 6, if you would like
to go, contact me. Our Lodge will have 2 or 3 tables, so if we
run over our 20, you can pay that day and still sit with the Lodge.
As Always, Your Fraternal Servant,
Paul

Hush!! My son, don’t talk so wild.

Father died six years ago.
Father didn’t die, love of mine.
He’s been working through the line.
Now he’s been Master, and so,
Now he’s no place to go.
There is no place for him to roam.
That is why he has come home.
Kiss him, he won’t bite you child.
You see, most Past Masters are meek and mild.

| Fellowship,
Fraternity, and Camaraderie |
Brethren,
I hope the new year has been good for most of you thus far. I
say most of you because I have already attended six funerals since
the year began. Three of them were for members of other Lodges
within our District. Over the last couple of years I have received
increasing requests to help out at Masonic Funeral Services from
the other Lodges, which, if I am able, am honored and privileged
to do. It has become a wonderful example of Fellowship, Fraternity,
and Camaraderie within our District. In January, Jerusalem Lodge
received a funeral request the day before their Stated Meeting,
with the Sevice taking place the night of their Stated Meeting.
Their Master called me, and some others about their dilemma. The
Masters of four other Lodges, along with some other Officers and
Members of other Lodges, made it a good showing for the Service.
This is the great spirit of our Fraternity and in our District.
One of the funerals I attended was for Dolores Boharsik, wife
of Bill Boharsik, Sr., P.M. and mother of Bill Jr. both of our
Lodge. Our sincerest condolences to them and their family.
To honor a person at their passing is a task we all must endure.
When it is a Brother Mason, whether we knew him or not, it is
a Fraternal duty, honor, and privilege to just be there. It says
in the Funeral Service; “How well he (we) maintained the
cares of life, we can attest.” Handling the passing of a
loved one is one of those many cares of life, to be performed
with the utmost dignity and respect.
The bulletin boards are almost complete. All the names are now
on, but I need to get more numbers to finish the years. I am just
starting the work on the roster and dues. I began with a list
of 129 names, who were delinquent at the beginning of February.
Here at the end of the month, it is down to 104, a whole lot better
than last year that began with a list of 188 names.
It would be nice to see more of you at Lodge. We have had more
programs and entertainment at our meetings. Coming up, here in
March, we will have a tribute to Apollo Lodge on what would have
been their 142nd Anniversary. Also, it is Irish month. There will
be 2 groups of Irish Dancers.
In April, it is our 182nd Anniversary. We will be hosting a District
Visitation and a Civil War re-enactment.
In May, we will have Senior Warden’s Night. Won’t
you come out and show your support for Rick. Yes! Brethren, he
WILL BE Worshipful Master next year.
As Always, Your Fraternal Servant,
Paul

| The
State of the Lodge |
Brethren,
As this year draws to a close I find myself pondering over the
accomplishments we have achieved and what is yet to be done. Fixing
our Membership Roster is probably the most difficult, and the
most delicate. We have taken our overall membership count from
535, when I first started, down to 430. 80% of which were Brethren
who stopped paying their dues 3, or more, years ago, but were
kept on our roles just the same. This was excess waste that cost
our Lodge over the years. There are still about 60 delinquents
on a list, that I will be dealing with in the coming year. This
project was so large and time consuming that it will take another
year to complete. That will be 3 in all, as I started it in my
first year as Master. This is my main reason for accepting your
nominating me for another term, I just hate leaving a job half
done.
If having to remove Brethren from our roles is the sad or negative
side of all this, there is also a good and positive side. You
see I have spoken with many Brethren who agreed to pay up their
past dues. To all of you who have done so, I, and your Lodge,
THANK YOU. With this additional income, we have purchased 4 dozen
new aprons for the Lodge, that were sorely needed. Also, I am
slowly putting up all the names of the Past Masters of all 3 Lodges
on our bulletin boards, in the lobby. This has turned into a bigger
and more expensive project than I first thought, but it will be
one that I will complete in the new year.
I know many of you were alarmed at a message in November's Notice
of the possibility of a merger. Let me put everyone's mind at
ease. There are no reasons, whatsoever, for us to be looking for
another Lodge with which to merge. We are a much stronger Lodge,
now, than we were couple of years ago. And, if we stay on course
we will get stronger. Are we without our share of problems, hardly
! But we will handle every situation together, and make the most
common sense, what is best for the Lodge, decision, possible.
That, my Brethren, is how we will continue to grow stronger.
Once again, this year, we will finish the year in the black, although
it does look closer than last year. All future Masters should
keep this goal in mind, as it is the most important in keeping
the Lodge strong.
On a fun note, Bob Crotts, our Tyler, and myself have built a
Christmas platform at the bottom of the stairs, between the 2
restrooms. There are 3 sets of trains, villages, and of course,
a Christmas Tree. Won't you come to Lodge and enjoy the gift we
have built for you. It is our attempt at making the Lodge a little
more like the home it should be. I wish you all, all the holiday
warmth that your heart can take.
Once again, your Fraternal Servant,
Paul

| Welcome
Back |
Brethren,
I hope you have all had an enjoyable summer. I know it would be
nice to extend it further, and I'm sure some of you will, e.g.
Shrine weekend at Virginia Beach, and Irish weekend at the shore.
But it is also time to get back to Lodge and begin planning for
the future. With that in mind, I have been a busy bee over the
summer.
I have already completed a tentative budget and program for next
year. That is a responsibility all Masters must complete for the
District Deputy by September 15th. The real work, over the summer
though, was on what I call the "infrastructure" of the
Lodge. From now on, when you come to Lodge you will notice some
improvements.
When you first walk in, take a look at our Past Masters Bulletin
Boards. We now have the names of all the Past Masters, from all
three Lodges listed. When you enter into the Lodge room, come
up and see our closet/storeroom. It has been cleaned, painted,
and re-arranged, with our Lodge initials on the door. But the
nicest improvement is our new Lodge aprons. We have purchased
enough to fill the needs of both our Lodge meetings, and our Funeral
Kit. It is my hope and prayer that you are able to look upon these
improvements and feel a greater sense of pride in YOUR Lodge.
In September, we will be doing something that we usually do not
have the opportunity to do at a Stated Meeting; we will be conferring
the Master Mason's Degree. Bro. Harry Hanczar, P.M., is a dual
member, also belonging to Beverly - Riverside Lodge No.107 over
in New Jersey. They wish to come and see a 3rd Degree in Pennsylvania.
Harry, and I, feel that if we are to have visitors from another
Jurisdiction coming to watch us work, there should be a sufficient
number of Brethren on the sidelines, to make a good showing of
our Lodge. This, unfortunately, would not happen at an Extra Meeting.
I hope many of you will attend and enjoy the Degree and the fellowship
with our visitors. Who knows where it may lead!
You Fraternal Servant,
Paul

| Moving
forward |
Brethren,
Greetings once again from the East. Summer break has arrived and
I wish you all a safe, enjoyable, and laid-back time.
In my last message I talked about the work being done to fix our
roster, and acquire outstanding dues. This is a labor that needs
to be performed every year, in March, with further follow-up in
May and June. In the Secretary’s Oath and Obligation it
says that he will “keep a true and faithful record”
and a “just and exact account”. As I mentioned last
time, the list of delinquents, as of the end of February, was
188 names. This had grown to such a monumental proportion, that
no one person, with work and family responsibilities, could have
accomplished, not Bro. Andy, nor Bro. Michael before him. How
it got so far out of control is immaterial, as we have errors
that go back 10 to 20 years. The important thing is that it is
finally getting fixed. It is my suggestion to future Masters that
a 3 man team take on this task. Anyway, the present list of delinquents
stands at 65, some of which have been contacted and have promised
to send in their dues. We shall see. It is time to give up this
quest, for now, and enjoy the summer. We will take it up again
next March.
Back in April, I did an inventory of our Lodge aprons. I found
that we have only 26 good 211 aprons. The rest are dingy, and
worn, 671 aprons. The same is true for our Funeral kit. Therefore,
over the summer, we will look into purchasing new Lodge aprons
with the added dues we have taken in.
We will be in need of a new Secretary, again next year, as Bro.
Andy has gotten a long awaited promotion at his job, and is relocating
to Delaware. I am putting this request out there as soon as possible
as it is a tough job that few people aspire to. The most important
of skills that is needed is that of being a computer wiz. If there
is anyone who feels they are up for the challenge, and would like
to take on the task, your Lodge needs you. Let me know.
See you in September.
Your
Fraternal Servant,
Paul

Here’s
to the RED of it,
There’s never been a thread of it,
In all the spread of it,
From foot to head.
But Masons bled for it,
Faced steel and lead for it,
Slept with the dead for it,
Bathing in RED.
Here’s to the WHITE of it,
Who knows the might of it,
But thrills at the sight of it,
Through day and night.
Womanhood’s care of it,
Made Manhood dare for it,
Purity’s prayer for it,
Kept it so WHITE.
Here’s to the BLUE of it,

Here’s to the SOUL of it,

Undertaking |
Brethren,
Greetings
from the East once more. As I explained in the first “Corner’s”
message, I will do this every so often to keep you updated on
the happenings of the Lodge. As you know we changed Secretaries
this year, and Bro. Andy is settling into the position. Along
with Treasurer, Bro. Keith, we are slowly working out all the
kinks.
Our greatest annual task is our Lodge Audit. As always, our Trustees
from both Committees do a wonderful job in preparing their Reports.
This “stupendous undertaking” was accomplished through
the diligent efforts of Bro. Fred Fedak, as head of our Audit
Committee, and the assistance of the Secretary, Treasurer, and
myself. After a month of wrangling over the many questions and
issues that the Audit Report poses, we finally sat down together
at the table, and got down to business. It was an exercise in
cooperation, peace, harmony, and good order; the likes of which
“warmed the inner cockles of me little heart.” It
is with sincere appreciation, I thank you all.
At our April Meeting we suspended 59 members for non-payment of
dues. This number was from a list of 98, which in turn came from
a list of 188 members who had not paid their dues as of the end
of February. The 59 we suspended all owed for 3 years, and probably
more. In my efforts to contact all of them, I had one fellow tell
me he moved to GA. 12 years ago. Another to FLA. 20 years ago.
They hadn’t paid dues in all that time, but were still on
the roles. One of the consistent nice things I heard from the
many Brethren I spoke with was about me calling them and just
making contact. Many of them had fallen away from the Lodge and
thought the Lodge didn’t care, because no one had ever contacted
them. Some agreed to send money; others said they weren’t
coming back to Phila. and to take them off the roles. But they
all enjoyed talking about the old town, the old neighborhood,
and the old lodge. It was nice to be able to give them a taste
of home, if only for 10 or 20 minutes. At present, I have a revamped
list of 103 names I will try to contact them over the next month
or so. It is important to the finances of our Lodge that this
work be done, but equally as important, to try and get members
back to Lodge. To increase our attendance is the extra icing on
the cake.
On Saturday, June 21st, about 10 of us will be attending a 3rd
degree at Composite Lodge No. 121 of the Most Worshipful Prince
Hall Grand Lodge of Pa. 4301 N. Broad St. We will be arriving
between 11:00 and 11:30AM, with ceremonies beginning at Noon.
If anyone else wishes to go, please contact me. Well I jabbered
long enough.
Always Your Fraternal Servant,
Paul

Take Time |
When I was 18 and just 3 weeks shy of graduating high school,
I purchased the 1st good used car of my young life from Ron Levitt.
Yes it was a "Cream puff". Previous to that, I had 3
or 4 $100 junkers.(We could do that back then). Anyway, along
with all the paraphernalia that dealers push upon you was a small
3 x 5 card, entitled "TAKE TIME". It listed 10 things
to take time for. It is a nice list of philosophies to try to
live by. I added a little extra to each one of the ten, and had
one per month printed in our Lodge Notice. For those who thought
they were cute and wondered where I had gotten them, click
here for the List of all 10.
Enjoy.
