Lodge History
Mahanoy City lodge #357 was constituted in 1865,
just two years after the incorporation of Mahanoy City itself. At the
time Mahanoy City was very small,
with only about 3,000 people living in the town - but it was growing.
With coal recently discovered in nearby hills there was a huge and fast
influx of people to
the town to work in the coal mines and other supporting jobs. Since the
nearest Masonic lodges were Pulaski #216, Tamaqua #238, and Ashland #294
each
about 12 miles away (a long way in 1865) it was decided that a new lodge
of
Freemasons be formed.
After numerous communications of support for the new lodge were drawn
up by nearby lodges, a Warrant was issued by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania.
On August 24th, 1865 in a special session of Grand Lodge, Mahanoy City
#357 was born. The first Worshipful Master of Mahanoy City was Bro.
Phillip Conrad.
