Continued History of Verona Lodge

Upon the celebration of our 125th Anniversary (2002) Verona Lodge No. 548, enjoyed a membership of 239, a small but mighty number. The 1980's were tough years; Worshipful Masters were serving more than once to keep our lodge alive. The 1990's found us growing not so much in numbers, but in active members who wanted to see the Lodge grow and prosper, to reach out to the community. Gratefully, we have not had a repeat Worshipful Master since 1995 and there are no Past Masters serving as elected officers.

Through the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania's Matching Charity Grant Program we provided service to the community. A child needed assistance both with finance and transportation. Several of our members who are airplane pilots transported him to and from hospital visits and money was provided to assist with other expenses. We provided funding to a local soccer club to purchase needed equipment for the children's games and they also use our social room for their monthly Board meetings. We were able to provide local school districts assistance through sponsorships of their annual musicals and other scholastic events and the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America in their projects as well. Our Lodge Hall hosted a town meeting for the community through the efforts of the local television station and we continue to be a member of the Verona Chamber of Commerce.

In 1995, Verona Lodge became the co-sponsoring body of Lincoln Chapter, Order of DeMolay, and provides both a meeting place for the Chapter as well as financial and advisory council support. In 2001, Verona Lodge became the sole sponsor of the DeMolay Chapter when Lincoln Commandrey No. 91 went dark. We continue to provide support to these young men of the Fraternal Youth program, for they are the future of our Fraternity.

From 1996 until 2000 we provided a second meeting place for the 38th Masonic District School of Instruction until the new District Deputy Grand Master deemed a third floor lodge hall a problem for the school. Yet, our members continue to climb the steps to attend lodge because of their desire to be part of Lodge No. 548. We have had several Worshipful Masters serve as President of the School of Instruction while serving on the floor of the Lodge.

Verona Lodge was once again honored in 2004 when Brother Robert F. Dunkle, Past Master 1983 and 1995 was appointed to the position of District Deputy Grand Master of the 38th Masonic District. He was installed in 2005. Brother Dunkle and many of his family members have served Freemasonry over the years.

Our future...
