The Salvation Army is an international religious and charitable movement and a branch of the Christian Church that is organized and operated in military fashion. Its clergy are called officers and thelay people are called soldiers.

The Salvation Army is motivated by a love for God and a concern for the needs of all humanity.

Its purpose is to:
    A. Preach the Christian Gospel
    B. Teach Christian truths
    C. Provide basic human necessities like food, clothing and shelter
    4. Work to promote spiritual, moral and physical well being

The Salvation Army attempts to help all regardless of race, culture, sex or age.

The Salvation Army was founded by William Booth who in 1865 left the Methodist ministry to preach as an independent evangelist in London's East End.  Booth adopted the name "The Salvation Army" in 1878.  Booth was the General.

The Salvation Army was persecuted by other religions because it was unconventional.  However The Salvation Army attracted the hungry, homeless and the poverty stricken.  (Most religions seem more interested in attracting those who can give the church a lot of money.)

The first meeting of the Salvation Army in the USA was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1879.  It was conducted by Eliza Shirley.
