Writing 

Writing probably began in Sumer at least 5400 years ago. 

Writing enables people to store their thoughts and discoveries on paper, or some other medium, so that people in the future can read of their discoveries.

Writing is probably a lot better method of communicating information to future generations that simply using word of mouth memorization.
