Word of the Chair

This is a word that is given to each Worshipful Master when he is installed as Worshipful Master.  It is like all other passwords and can be used by Worshipful Master to prove to other Worshipful Masters, at least in the State of Pennsylvania, that they are, or have been a Worshipful Master, or that they have previously been given the Word of the Chair.

Other states may or may not use the Word of the Chair.  Not all states do.  Ohio seems to not use it and Florida does not seem to have a Word of the Chair.  I have no idea how many states has a special Word of the Chair.

At one time the Word of the Chair could be presented to any Mason in an honorary degree which the Mason could purchase.  This can no longer be done, as far as I know.  It was called Passing to the Chair

A degree in the York Rite also gives the Word of the Chair, but not in Pennsylvania, or so I am told by  our current DDGM.
