Third Crusade

The Third Crusade was organized by King Richard the Lionheart of England and Philip Augustus of France.

The Knights Templar stayed out of this crusade and they fought against the Nazari Islamic sect of the Assassins instead.  They also seemed to fight against the Knights Hospitallers. (See "The Templar Pirates" page 33)

The Third Crusade started in 1188 with forces from England, France, and Italy heading for the Holy Land.  They started a two year siege of Acre in 1189.  The Third Crusade did not recapture Jerusalem but did recapture Acre. (See "The History of Freemasonry" by Mackey page 220)
