Square and Compasses

The VSL and the Square and Compasses make up the the Three Great Lights of Freemasonry.

The Square and Compasses are the most recognizable symbol of Freemasonry.  The letter 'G' is usually shown in the center of the area bounded by the Square and Compasses.

The square is said by some to represent the the female, or passive, generative principle while the compasses are said to represent the male, or active, generative principle.

The combination of the Compasses above the Square is said to represent the active male (Sun) impregnating the passive female (Earth) with its life producing 'rays' to keep civilization alive with new and thus everlasting life.
