The Shrine was formed by 13 Masons in 1872 with the establishment of the Mecca Shrine in New York City.

They chose an Arabic theme for the new order.

Members of the Shrine wear a Red Fez at Shrine functions.

The buoyant philosophy of the Shrine is said to be "Pleasure without intemperance, hospitality without rudeness and jollity without coarseness."

The Shrine is responsible for the wonderful Shriners Hospitals for Children.

All members of the Shrine are Freemasons, as being a Freemasons is the main requirement for joining the Shrine.  Members of the Shrine are called Shriners.

The full name of the Shrine is Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine for North America and is often simply called the Shrine.
