Secrecy

Secrecy is usually the result of fear.  Fear that someone will not approve of one's beliefs or actions.

The Freemasons may have practiced secrecy in an attempt to keep from having its members Burned at the Stake for its early teaching that the Earth was a sphere instead of being flat and that the Earth revolved around the Sun which contradicted the official teachings of the Catholic Church of that time.
