From Greek Mythology. Polyphemus was the gigantic one-eyed Cyclops who was the son of Poseidon and Thoosa. Polyphemus is an important character in Homer's "Odyssey" and his name is said to mean famous. Polyphemus ate some of the men led by Odysseus. Odysseus later blinded Polyphemus with a large sharpened stick. Odysseus and his men escaped riding under the bellies of some sheep.
Theocritus considered Polyphemus to have been a gentle shepherd who was in love with the sea-nymph Galatea.
