Operation "Gladio"

This is said to have been a plan created shortly after WW2 by James Jesus Angleton, a CIA official, to prevent a communist takeover of Italy.

It involved creating alliances between the CIA, the Mafia, the Vatican, and the Knights of Malta. (See "Rule by Secrecy" page 257)
