Oblate Spheroid

This is the shape taken by a basketball when the top is pressed down a little so the ball has a greater diameter at its equator than thru its poles.

The Earth is for all practical purposes an Oblate Spheroid and not a Sphere.

FYI: A football (American) is basically the shape of a Problate Spheroid.
