.
The Virgin who is said, by Christians, to have given a Virgin Birth to Jesus Christ about 4 BC.
She is just one of the many possible Virgins who gave Birth to a God throughout History.
Her husband was called Joseph.
Certain Christian religions, most notably the Catholic Church, maintain that Mary remained a Virgin her entire life, however Jesus Christ is said (by the Holy Bible) to have at least had a brother, James (James the Just), who is not said to have been born of a Virgin. Therefore it seems likely that Mary had sex with Joseph, or perhaps someone else if she was promiscuous, after the birth of Jesus Christ. Perhaps she again had sex with an Angel or with God (which could be considered incest or adultry). Since Jesus Christ was born first the fact that he had siblings does not rule out his Virgin Birth. (Is seems that back in the time of Jesus Christ the term that was translated into 'Virgin' meant only a young woman, not specifically a young woman who had never engaged in Sexual Intercourse.)
Pope John Paul II is said to have issued a statement in 1996 that Jesus Christ was the only child of Mary. I have no idea why he would have said this to contradict the Holy Bible. He must have been correct, at least to followers of the Catholic Church, due to the Infallibility of the Pope. See "The Second Messiah" page 2 and 3.
Mary is often considered by many Christians to have been the Mother of God, which would indicate that Mary needed to exist before God in order to have been God's Mother. How could she be the Mother of God if she existed before God who created the Universe? This makes no sense to any logical thinking person. One must remember that Religious beliefs do not require, or in any way desire, any logic, especially any logic that does not agree totally with the teachings of that Religion.
Mary is said to have been one of the students at a school run by the priests of Jerusalem who had titles named after the Angels. Once the girls reached puberty she was impregnated by one of the priest to preserve the bloodlines of Levi and David. A priest known as 'Angel Gabriel' had sex with Mary and then arranged for her to be married to a much older man named Joseph. Mary is said to have not been pleased with Joseph because he was so much older but later loved him and had another 4 boys and 3 girls with him. (See "The Second Messiah" p 77) (This story really conflicts with the concept of Mary being a perpetual virgin and having been made pregnant by a representative of God. This story actually makes a lot more sense than that of having a supernatural entity come from somewhere and have sex with Mary. Priests today are still having sex with children but now they seem to be more homosexual in their activities. At least in this story the 'Angel Gabriel' seems to have not been a queer, like so many of today's priests. Mary may have been a Virgin when she was probably raped by the "Angel Gabriel" but she would not have been a virgin for her later escapades with her husband Joseph. This would make the Perpetual Virginity of Mary rather untrue and would thus more agree with the Holy Bible which claims that she had other children. Catholics will probably not like this concept at all since an infallible Pope has declared that Mary remained a Virgin for her entire life on Earth. Poor girl, and poor Joseph.)
Mary may simply be the name used by the Christians to indicate the constellation Virgo, the Virgin.
Mary is also a very common first name for females, at least in America.
