Manger
A Manger is a trough for holding fodder for cattle. The word is said to have come from the French word Manger, meaning to eat. (Webster's Dictionary)
Christian teaching says that Jesus Christ was born in a Manger because there was no place for him in the inn.
A Manger is usually considered to be place of darkness, which seems an unlikely place for God to have been born, but it does seem to relate to the fact that Jesus Christ is said to have been born at about the darkest day of the year, at leas in the Northern Hemisphere. If Jesus Christ had been born in the Southern Hemisphere perhaps his birthday would have been celebrated about June 21 (The summer solstice) since that would have been the darkest days of the year South of the Equator.
The Gods of many religions have been born in dark places like a cave or a manger, just like most have had their birthdays on or near the winter solstice.
