Major Arcana
The Major Arcana is part of the Tarot and consists of 22 numbered picture cards. All but one of these cards, the Fool or Joker, vanished from the Tarot at the same time that the knight cards were removed from the Minor Arcana when the Catholic Church declared the Knights Templar as heretics. The Catholic Church is said to have then considered the Major Arcana to be 'the rungs of a ladder leading to hell' and 'the Devil's breviary' and thus removed these offending cards.
I have a deck of Tarot Cards and they contain some very pretty artwork. My deck is called the Universal Waite Tarot Deck. Any decent bookstore will carry, or can get, the Tarot.
The was also called the Suit of Trumps or the Greater Secrets.
The other part of the Tarot is the Minor Arcana.
See "The Second Messiah" p 88-100 for more info.
See The Major Arcana Card List for the names of each of the 22 cards.
I have read that the of two paired cards adds up to 20. I have no idea at this time. If true then the Devil card (#5) pairs up with the Hierophant (Pope #15). Coincidence?
