Giles de Colonna

Giles de Colonna was the man who educated King Philip IV of France.

Giles de Colonna later became Archbishop of Burges.

Giles de Colonna is said to have told Philip: 'Jesus Christ has not given any temporal domination to his church, and the king of France has his authority from God alone.'  This caused Philip to bow to no man and to not be subservient to the will of the Catholic Church.
