Geoffrey of Monmouth
Geoffrey of Monmouth is said to have been the man who wrote "The Matter of Britain" in the city of Oxford.
He describes Arthur, perhaps King Arthur, as a messianic savior of his people from a magical mating between Igerna and Uther Pendragon. Arthur's reign is said to have started in 505 AD at a place called Caerleon and to have lasted until he was wounded and went to Avalon to be resurrected and to return triumphant. (This has a lot of similarities with the story of Jesus Christ.) (see "the Second Messiah" p 104)
