GAOTU or Great Architect of the Universe

This Masonic term is used to indicate the one living a true God who is known to others by a variety of names.  The name of God, or the Creator, usually used by the Freemasons.

Most Religions that believe in a single Supreme Being also believe that the Supreme Being was the Creator of the Universe.  The various religions may have different names for the Supreme Being but the various names refer to the one Great Architect of the Universe.

Since throughout history many many people have been killed because of the name they use for the Supreme Being, use a term that all religions should not find objectionable.  We as Freemasons see no reason to kill others just because they call the Supreme Being by a different name.  Christians and Muslims have probably killed more people throughout history than all the other groups put together.

Freemasons are free to worship any supreme being they choose to worship, regardless of what name they use for God.

The GAOTU created the universe under whatever name you choose to call Him.

Since the Freemasons do not single out the name 'God' they do not have to fight amongst each other to make the other person believe in their name for God.  Unlike Christianity and Islam, I know of no case where the Freemasons have killed one another over the name of God.
