The First Degree of Freemasonry is called the Entered Apprentice Degree

During the First Degree of Freemasonry the candidate takes upon himself a solemn, serious, and binding oath and obligation that binds him to secrecy.

During the First Degree of Freemasonry he is brought From Darkness to Light.

After the First Degree of Freemasonry a man is considered to be a Mason, but only an Entered Apprentice Mason.  Later he will receive the Second Degree of Freemasonry and then still later he will receive the Third Degree of Freemasonry

A Master Mason, is also a Entered Apprentice Mason and also a Fellow Craft Mason, since he has already taken the previous degrees just like a college graduate has most likely also graduated from kindergarten, grade school and high school.

When a Lodge is open in the Entered Apprentice Degree the only work that can be done is that of conferring the First Degree of Freemasonry upon a candidate.  No other business may by done.
