Fear

The term Fear in the past, around the time the King James Version of the Holy Bible was translated, seems to have meant something like to revere or hold in great esteem instead of to be afraid of as the word seems to currently mean.

This concept makes a lot of sense.

Fear can also mean being afraid of something.

As the Roman poet Lucretius said: "Fear was the first thing on earth to make gods."  I take this to mean that since man had a fear of something he created a god to protect him from his fear.
