Extra Meetings
Extra Meetings are usually held for the conferring of Degrees. They are usually held on a different day than the Stated Meeting so as to not interfere with the regular Business of a Lodge, which must be conducted at the Stated Meeting. In addition to Extra Meetings and Stated Meetings the Lodge may hold Special Meetings.
Most candidates for Masonry receive their degrees at Extra Meetings of a Lodge. The Officers, or at least several of them, spend a lot of time preparing to give the Degree to the candidate. The actual conferring of a degree is done solely from memory as it is not officially written down on paper in Pennsylvania. It takes a man, and his instructor, a lot of time to learn how to properly give a degree. The memorizing of the Degrees is sometimes done at unofficial meetings commonly known amongst Mason as Lodge Practice. In addition to Lodge Practice the conferrer of a Degree and his instructor spend a lot of time on their own. The School of Instruction can also assist in the learning of Degree Work.
