Dominican Black Friars
The Dominican Black Friars, along with the Franciscan Gray Friars, conducted the tortures during the Catholic Inquisition on behalf of a succession of Popes. (See "Rule by Secrecy" page 314)
I do not know the current status of the Dominican Black Friars but the Inquisition is said to still be alive and well, but under a new name. It is now said to be known as the "Congregation for the Doctrine of The Faith."
I do not think that they still Burn People at the Stake, as they were so fond of doing in the past. I assume that this practice has been phased out since at least in countries not under the control of a Religion it would be considered murder. In America it would be cruel and unusual punishment. If done to anyone but a White male it would also be considered a 'hate crime' which would require additional punishment.
