Thomas de Torquemada
He was a member of the Dominicans.
He was the Grand Inquisitor of the Inquisition.
He initiated the Spanish Inquisition, a continuation of the Catholic Inquisition in 1480. It was aimed mainly at Jews and Muslims.
This inquisition was not dissolved until 1820.
By 1486 the list of ecclesiastical crimes had grown to include Satan Worship, herbalists, midwives, and anything else that did not agree with the values of the Catholic Church and/or the local social values. (See "Rule by Secrecy" page 314)
The Inquisition of the Catholic Church seems to continue to this date under a new name, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
