Marquis de Lafayette

He lived from 1757 until 1834.  He was a French statesman and officer who outfitted his own ship and sailed to America in 1776 to assist the American Colonists in fighting against England.  He was commissioned as a major general in the Continental Army on 31 July 1777.  He was a friend and associate of George Washington and fought with him at Valley Forge.  He returned to France in 1781 and later presented George Washington with the famous Apron that is now possessed by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania.  It is unknown where he received his Masonic Degrees but at least 75 US Masonic bodies are named after him.
