Assumption of Mary

A belief among at least some followers of the Catholic Church that Mary, the claimed Mother of Jesus Christ, at least according to Christianity, was taken directly to Heaven either after her death or perhaps she never died and just went to Heaven.

The Assumption of Mary is not universally accepted even by other Christians

Perhaps the idea comes from the fact that the Constellation Virgo (The Virgin), one of the 12 Signs of the Zodiac, is in the Heavens looking down upon us.  Of course Virgo was in the Heavens long before Mary was ever born, and is still there no matter what happened to Mary.  Perhaps Mary was a name given by the Christians to Virgo.

I do not think that just because a Pope named Pope Pius XII declared it to be true on 01 Nov 1950 makes it such.  Be a Freethinker and decide for yourself.  Also remember that the Catholic Church considers the Pope to be Infallible, due to the Infallibility of the Pope, so it must be true especially if you are a Catholic.  At one time several Popes declared that the Earth was flat and that the rest of the universe revolved around the Earth. The Catholic Church even imprisoned Galileo for life for teaching that a Spherical Earth rotated around the SunPopes are not always correct just because the Catholic Church says that Popes are infallible.

The Feast Day for the Assumption of Mary is held each year on 15 August

On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII solemnly declared:

By the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory[15]

Roman Catholic theologians consider this declaration by Pius XII to be an ex cathedra use of Papal Infallibility.  Although Pope Pius XII deliberately left open the question of whether Mary died before her Assumption, the more common teaching of the early Fathers is that she did.
