American Freemasonry

American Freemasonry developed somewhat from British Freemasonry.  It however, is not self made, or a carbon copy of British Freemasonry.

It is said that American Freemasonry was very different from its British counterpart. The British Masons would hardly recognize American Freemasonry as Freemasonry. (See "Who's Afraid of Freemasons?" by Piatigorsky page 163)

American Freemasonry began in America with the founding of Military Lodges in the British Army.  Most were under the Grand lodge of England and some may have been under the Grand Lodge of Ireland. (See "The Little Book of Freemasonry" p 59)

After the American Revolution Freemasonry in America was considered by many to be a foreign institution. The Federalist ideology opposed the cosmopolitanism of Freemasonry. (See "Who's Afraid of Freemasons?" by Piatigorsky page 164)

It is said that by the time of the American Revolution there were between 80 and 100 Lodges in America.
